I am not really in to floating. (I can get seasick riding on the bus over Spit Bridge!)
However, stocking Icom marine radios is an absolute must in a harbour city.
What is the difference between IC-M73 and IC-M73EURO?
Bandwidth and power output: EURO version is 5W (6W for non-EURO).
Even if you are not in to marine, here is something worth knowing:
A large block of spectrum for maritime purposes is provided for in the VHF maritime mobile band. The VHF maritime mobile band consists of channels operating in the frequency range 156.000 MHz to 162.050 MHz, apart from those portions within this frequency range that are allocated to the land mobile service.
Channel 16 (frequency 156.800 MHz) is used for calling other stations or for distress alerting. Channel 13 should be used to contact a ship when there is danger of a collision. All ships of length 20m or greater are required to guard VHF channel 13, in addition to VHF channel 16.
Drifting in an unwanted direction? Hit CH16.
There are a couple things about IC-M73 that are super impressive: the radio is water resistant to a depth of 1.5m for 30 minutes. That is just cool.
Also, the battery clip is so mighty tight that the battery will never detach itself – no matter what. You literally need a tool of some kind to open it.
The third thing I like: it is made in Japan. There is no disrespect for other brands or makers – but I love Japanese made radios, and this one is built like a brick.
Instruction manual comes with a “CAUTION: NEVER carry the transceiver by holding the antenna”. Because some people obviously do.
