In my books, it has to be the story of Don Miller, W9WNV. If you haven’t heard of Don, then I am not going to spoil your enjoyment of discovering his story. In short: it was W9WNV who invented the pile up, split operation, 5NN as a short of ‘599’. Probably the first DX expeditioner, and man with an unusual share of controversies. For some, Don was (and still is!) a hero, for others: a villain. Don is now AE6IY and if you hear or work him, love him or hate him, be aware that you are talking to one of amateur radio’s living icons.

Again, I am not going to spoil your enjoyment; pour yourself a large cup of coffee, and start Googling W9WNV.

Photo above: Don Miller on a ‘rock’ falsely claiming that the operation location was St. Peter and Paul PY0S, while the actual location was on a ship off the Venezuelan coast.
