Last night I stumbled across Peter Parker’s video on YouTube titled “Preserve the CW space in Australia’s 40m band”. VK3YE has provided a link to the WIA website, which I followed. Quite frankly, I was shocked to discover that my organisation has put out a proposal to shrink the 40KHz wide CW allocation to a mere 25KHz! The argument for shrinkage is weak and unconvincing: in order to harmonize mode allocations worldwide, and in order to give more space for digital and SSB users, we should voluntarily give away almost half of the CW band segment!

You can frame it any way you want, but I can bet my last dollar that the Americans, Japanese, Russians or any European organisation would never advocate for CW segment reduction. And you can only imagine the chaos and interference on the band once sideband stations from down under appear on 7025. Overnight we would become the laughing stock of the worldwide ham community; a dancing kangaroo, as cool as Indonesian SSB pirates.

Link to the WIA proposal is here: https://www.wia.org.au/newsevents/news/2024/20240709-1/index.php

And I strongly suggest that you dive into it. There, you will find an invitation to provide your input by emailing tac@wia.org.au. It is absolutely crucial that you do.

Please keep in mind that Morse is a gentleman’s mode, so respond like a gentleman: “While I do appreciate the WIAs efforts in regards to the 40m band plan, at this stage, I see no need for change”.
