According to my research, 70% of amateurs are only interested in the main transceiver, showing a complete disinterest in accompanying accessories. Matching desk microphones, external speakers, antenna tuners, matching amplifiers – they couldn’t care less. The radio room is filled to the roof with every brand box imaginable, yet there is not a ‘line’ in sight.
If you are new to radio: line is a term which is used to describe a perfectly matched setup – receiver, transmitter, amplifier, tuner as well as number of other accessories, all of the same model and maker. Having a ‘line’ was a sign of sophistication as well as prestige, an envy of fellow amateurs. A line featured on a QSL card next to your calling was a massive flex.
However with transistorisation, it is possible to fit almost everything into a single box so lines are now rarely seen.
A huge mistake in my opinion. Why? Because investing a bit of money in accessories to match your transceiver is a smart investment. Not only will you get more enjoyment playing with all the toys but the collectability and ultimately the resale value of your line would be preserved for years to come. Collectors are always happy to pay a premium for a line rather than for a bunch of gear sold individually.
